Indeed, comparing Ebenezer Scrooge, all alone in his mansion on Christmas Eve, bereft of any true friends, to our current president stalking the empty halls of the White House, utterly isolated and alone, was more than apt.
Today, The Grump walked out of his meeting with Chuck and Nancy—and with the temerity of a two-year-old’s temper tantrum—insisted he would take his toys and go hide until in the oval office until he got his way. And, if we can believe the reports coming out today, he is also apparently readying to unconstitutionally declare a national emergency, where one doesn't exist, and to attempt autocratic rule, even as his Republican enablers in the House and Senate seem to be talking about giving him cover, choosing to protect their president and their party while forsaking their country and the Constitution of the United States that they all took a solemn oath to both protect and dear fend.
Clearly President Grump is in need of a time-out, perhaps a long one. But the way in which he is taking a time-out is at the expense of the American people, the American economy, and millions of hardworking Americans who will be put out of work and forsaking a paycheck because of a crisis of The Grump’s own making.
Grownup supervision is required. Luckily, we now have a strong leader at the helm of the democratically controlled House of Representatives. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, should not give in to this tiny tyrant’s demands, but pass legislation as they intend to do, to reopen the government one agency at a time if need be, peeling off Republican Representatives and Senators one by one, until they have a veto-proof majority to override Little Mr. Grump, sitting in his high chair in the oval office.
If The Grump should attempt to step beyond his bounds and declare a national emergency, the grownups in the Judiciary will have to put him back in his high chair, and take away his toys.
If anything, such an attempt by the White House toddler will only succeed in bringing on the inevitable constitutional crisis all the sooner, and force the Democrats’ hands in Congress to begin an already long-over-due impeachment process. Indeed, the Dems in the House can get the ball rolling simply with all the facts that we already know and all clear indications of the many ways in which Grump has openly attacked our Constitution, our Institutions, and our Rule of Law. There are already felony charges waiting in the wings for Little Mr. Grump, as indicated by the SDNY, for example, simply waiting to be looked into my the House Judiciary Committee.
What seems so disheartening in all of this is that The Grump, who seemed so willing to steal Christmas for millions of Americans by denying them a paycheck or, in the case of the thousands upon thousands of workers employed by or as a government contractor, now seems more than happy to steal their Happy New Year as well.
Appearing on national TV in ten free minutes of primetime granted him magnanimously and quite stupidly by the five major entertainment networks last night, only so that The Gump Who Threatens To Steal New Year could put forward the same lies he has perpetrated on the American public for over three years, ever since he descended the gold escalator in his golden tower, to declare that Mexicans, both rapists and murderers, are coming across our southern border. Not only are Mexicans not as The Grump described, they were also not coming across our southern border in hordes. Not then. Not now.
The Grump has in three years time come nowhere closer to the truth and the reality of our situation at the border. The only crisis at our southern border is the humanitarian one, which he and his demented administration have created, in their ongoing lies and deceit. Central Americans gathering at out border to legally ask for asylum are doing anything illegal. They are guaranteed this right by international laws that we as a nation helped create and agreed to abide by. That is the truth. That Grump decided to illegally kidnap children at the border, ripping them from the arms of their parents, and that nothing has yet been done to address this injustice is a crisis, and one we will never hear the Grump acknowledge.
We are in a national crisis, though, given we have a president who is acting more and more irrationally, who is inept, incompetent, and a pathological liar and the worst possible negotiator that no one in their right mind could or should ever trust. Our southern border will be just fine, thank you, once we remove the real problem from our midst. And the real problem is now The Grump Who Threatens to Steal the New Year.
Clearly, we will not have a Happy New Year in 2019 until the Grump is taken to task and put out of an office that—having been aided and abetted by his own campaign violations and increasingly clear conspiracy that he and his campaign had with the Russian Government—he was never rightfully elected to in the first place.
